Ounasvaara
Ounasvaara Ski Resort, located just a couple of kilometers away, is a great place for outdoor activities all year round!
In winter, you can go downhill skiing, cross-country skiing and sledding in Ounasvaara. Equipment can be rented on site. Also try mountain biking!
Numerous winter hiking trails will lead you into the nature of Lapland, and the higher you hike, the better the scenery becomes. Ounasvaara is also a good place to watch the Northern Lights. The observation tower offers magnificent views of the center of Rovaniemi. You can also find campfire sites in the area. Try to find the Tottorakka lift station where the scenery is at its best!
In summer, Ounasvaara offers a summer toboggan run and mountain biking trails.
Vikaköngäs
There are many sheds in Rovaniemi area where everyone can freely make a campfire in the marked places, fry sausages and enjoy soot pot coffee.
In my opinion, the most beautiful of these places is the Vikaköngäs nature site by Vaattunkijoki.
The place is located approx. 20 km from the center of Rovaniemi, but the bonfire sites, the river and the "friendship bridge" (to which you can attach your own padlock) are right next to the parking lot, so you don't have to hike much.
Of course, several routes leading to nature leave from the place if you want to take a longer nature walk.
Auttiköngäs
One of the most beautiful waterfalls in Finland and the peace of the taiga forest. Just under an hour away from Rovaniemi is the great day trip destination of Auttiköngäs.
Even the drive along the beautiful Kemijoki branch towards Auttiköngäs is an experience. The nature trail that goes around Auttiköngäs takes you over one of Finland's finest waterfalls, leads you to the peace of the northern primeval forests and to a high cliff to look far into the greenery of the taiga forest.
Auttiköngäs is a great excursion destination in all seasons but we love it best late autumn or early winter when there is not too much snow yet.
